Managing blood glucose levels can feel overwhelming, especially for those new to monitoring their health. With nearly 34 million Americans living with diabetes, understanding your body is crucial. Recently, I took a step towards this understanding by trying a Stelo continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Initially, I felt nervous about inserting the device, but I quickly got used to it and barely notice it now.

In this post, I’ll share my experiences with the Stelo CGM, the surprising effects of certain foods on my glucose levels, and how I’m learning to manage my daily averages more effectively.

The Initial Hesitation

When I first considered using the Stelo CGM, I felt both curious and a bit scared. The idea of inserting something into my skin seemed daunting. However, I recognized that knowing my blood glucose levels is essential for my overall health.

After calming my nerves and doing some research, I decided to give it a shot. The insertion process turned out to be straightforward, and soon enough, I forgot it was even there.

Now, the Stelo CGM provides me with real-time data, allowing me to make better decisions about what I eat and how I stay active.

Discovering Food Impacts

Using the Stelo CGM revealed some surprising facts about how different foods influence my blood glucose levels. For example, I thought gluten-free snacks would be healthy choices, but I learned the hard way that’s not always true.

One time, I tried a gluten-free cookie, expecting it to be safe. Instead, my glucose levels shot up by 40% after eating it. This showed me that not all gluten-free foods are created equal, and I have to choose wisely.

As I continued tracking my glucose levels, patterns became clear. Foods rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates consistently caused spikes. In contrast, I noticed that whole foods, such as leafy greens and lean chicken, had a stabilizing effect. This knowledge has empowered me to make healthier food choices.

The Role of Physical Activity

Another significant realization was how physical activity affects my blood glucose levels. I discovered that a simple walk after meals could significantly lower my glucose. Research shows that even a 15-minute walk can reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes by 20-50%.

Incorporating this habit into my routine has been rewarding. Regular walks not only help balance my glucose but also enhance my overall mood and energy. It’s a simple yet effective strategy.

Lowering My Daily Average

My primary goal with the Stelo CGM is to lower my daily average glucose levels. This requires a blend of mindful eating, regular physical exercise, and consistent tracking.

Tracking my meals has been a game-changer. I started keeping a food diary, noting everything I eat and how it impacts my glucose readings. This practice helps me identify which foods to avoid—like that rebellious gluten-free cookie—and which ones to keep, such as bacon and eggs or grilled salmon.

I am also focusing on improving my Glucose Ketone Index (GKI). A lower GKI is linked to better metabolism, and my goal is to achieve this by making small, sustainable changes to my diet and lifestyle. For example, cutting down sugary drinks and increasing my intake of whole foods has already shown promising results.

The Journey Ahead

I know that understanding my blood glucose levels is an ongoing journey. The Stelo CGM has equipped me with valuable insights, but I recognize the importance of being patient and persistent.

I'm learning to appreciate the small victories, whether that’s achieving a lower reading after a meal or resisting a sugary snack. Every tiny success adds up to better health.

As I move forward, I’m excited to see how my choices affect my body. The insights gained from the Stelo CGM will guide me toward making healthier decisions that support my well-being.

Embracing the New Path

Using a Stelo continuous glucose monitor has changed how I approach managing my blood glucose levels. Despite initial fears, I adapted quickly and now find it integral to my daily routine.

This journey has helped me uncover the surprising impacts of various foods on my glucose levels, the significance of physical activity, and the importance of setting goals for lowering my daily averages and GKI.

As I continue on this path, I hope to reach better health and well-being. If you're thinking about using a CGM or want to understand your body better, I encourage you to take the plunge. The insights you gain can be life-changing.
